I’m so excited to share this DIY Race Bib and Medal Display that I made to keep up with racing souvenirs. Never in a million years did I think I would run a 5K much less multiple 5Ks and two half marathon! I love my display and I’m hoping to continue to add to it each year!
Every race I complete has special memories and I find that I can’t just toss away these souvenirs. Each one is a step in my journey. I’ve been pinning some DIY display ideas on Pinterest
and since my weekend road trip was cancelled at the last minute I decided to spend some time making one of my own.
I found a board in my shed that would work and off to the craft store I went for supplies.
- a piece of plywood or other board approximately 12 inches x 12 inches
- Mod Podge (glossy finish)
- one 12×12 inch piece of scrapbook paper
- wooden letters (I found these at AC Moore)
- paint to match your paper
- 4 hooks (I used clear Command 3M hooks)
- strong glue (I used Gorilla glue)
- some race bibs and medals!
Paint the edges of the board. Because my paper didn’t cover the board completely I also painted on the top about one inch all around the perimeter.
Cover the board with mod podge. If you haven’t ever used it, it’s super easy! The trick is to use a lot and to get messy. If you’re hands are not sticky then you didn’t do it right. Place your paper on top and place two more coats of mod podge over the entire surface. Use your fingers to smooth out any wrinkles. If you can’t get it perfectly smooth it’s okay. Most of the wrinkles will flatten out as it dries.
While this is drying, paint your letters a color to match.
After everything is dry, attach your letters with gorilla glue. Place hooks underneath to hold your bibs and attach hooks along the bottom for your medals. I only have a few medals so I only have four hooks. I have room to add more as I earn more though! (Edited to add: the plastic sticky hooks were not strong enough to hold my medals. I suggest using screw-in cup hooks along the bottom instead.)
Don’t you like that antique smoke detector?
Are you sentimental about souvenirs and mementos? Do you display your bibs and medals? I’d love to see how other people display their medals and bibs!
