Museum of Life and Science: Durham, NC

Our family absolutely loves the Museum of Life and Science in Durham, NC!  I wish we lived a little bit closer so we could go more often but at around two hours it’s still close enough for a day trip. The museum covers 84 acres of land and you can easily spend all day there and still not see everything!

There is a two-story interactive science center, an absolutely amazing butterfly house, and over 60 species of animals!  There is a wolf enclosure, black bears, lemurs, insects, snakes, and more!  (The kids loved watching feeding time in the snake exhibit.) You can go on a train ride, climb on a miniature indoor rock wall, and hold a butterfly in your hand.  There is so much to do we couldn’t even see everything and we spent the entire day there.

We spent most of our time outdoors.  We loved the huge treehouse.

The boys really loved the dinosaur walking trail and the fossil dig area.

Into the Mist was a great place to sit and take a break.  The kids all loved running around the grassy play area and exploring the hobbit style huts.  Water mists throughout the entire play area making it a great exhibit on hot summer days!

The Sound Garden has a fun exhibit where you can learn about sound waves.  It was fascinating to see how far sound waves travel.

The butterfly house was incredible!  They have times throughout the day when you can see new butterflies released and they will land right in your hands.

We loved the farm animal area and Layla and Cyrus both had fun sitting in this saddle!

There is a ton of indoor stuff that we barely had time to explore!  If you have a kid who likes science they will love all of the hands on exhibits inside!

The museum is located in Durham and is easy to find.  Admission is a little pricey but well worth it for what you get.  You will definitely want to get there early and plan to spend the entire day.  If you have a North Carolina Aquarium membership then you get a discount on admission (and the aquarium membership is definitely worth the price if you have a large family!).  They have a cafe and a coffee shop on site and the food was actually pretty good and there is a nice size gift shop as well.

We loved our trip there and plan to visit again soon!
